In Paris, the Galeries Lafayette is not just a store. Right in the heart of the Boulevard Haussmann, with its millions of passers-by each year, the Galeries are considered by tourists to be an embassy of French taste, sometimes even as one of the capital’s monuments in its own right. And the shop front steps up to the mark this year with the second Paris & Création event, which has a dual aspect.
At the Galerie des Galeries, Vanessa Bruno has been given free reign, producing a perfect synergy between the secular store and the designer of chic and simplicity. The store front on the Boulevard Haussmann meanwhile offers a tour of the city’s artistic calendar through window displays by eight cultural institutions: the Pompidou Centre, Les Arts Décoratifs, the Maison Rouge, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Palais de Tokyo, which were all present in 2009, plus three newcomers this year, the Cité de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine, the Parc de la Villette and the Lieu du Design. At the same time, the Galeries are collaborating with 10 Years of Designer’s Days – initiatives which can only be applauded.
